10 necessities for first-time mums

Published by

The usual advice is that expectant mothers should have a bag packed up with all they need for their hospital stay long before their baby is due, so that there are no surprises. Some say having your bag ready even as early as during the second trimester is not a bad way to go. However, by the 36th week, which is roughly 4weeks before, it ought to be done. Then even if your baby decides, like some do, to show up earlier than the due date, you will not be taken unawares. You can put two bags together, one for  the baby and one for you, with the following items in them.

For Mum

  1. Nursing tools

A nursing bra, nursing shirt and nursing pad are very useful after delivery.

  1. Toiletries

Bring all your usual toiletries, to keep clean. After all, nothing beats an after-birth shower!

  1. Comfy clothes

Comfort is key, so bring loose nightwear, cozy socks, and loose underwear.

  1. Snacks

It is helpful to have something to munch on, and also for anyone who comes to visit.

  1. Entertainment

You will have lots of down time in the hospital after giving birth, so bring along a novel, or your favourite CD.

For Baby

  1. Diapers
  2. Tissues and wipes

There’s always something to wipe up when you have a baby around, from vomit to spit and everything in between.

  1. Car seat

Many hospitals won’t let you take your baby away  without one. Besides, it is important to ensure your baby’s safety while in motion.

  1. Formula & baby bottles

Your bundle of joy is going to get hungry at one point, so it is good to have some food around, especially if you don’t plan on breastfeeding.

  1. Clothing

Get different sizes, in case your baby is tiny or big. Make sure they’re warm and snug.

Remember that this is just a guide and that the effort will amount to nothing if you forget the bags at home, in the panic and confusion that often comes with labour. Therefore, put your packed bags in a conspicuous place, maybe by your bedside or even in the trunk of your car, so you are ready to go. Here is wishing you a safe delivery and happy motherhood!
