Premier League referees’ chief Howard Webb has admitted that VAR failed to consider whether Manchester City midfielder, Enzo Fernandez, was offside during Erling Haaland’s controversial winner against Manchester United in Sunday’s Manchester derby.
Webb said video assistant referee Matt Donohue and his assistant, Blake Antrobus, became too focused on determining whether Haaland was offside and failed to assess Fernandez’s position and involvement in the build-up.
Haaland’s 60th-minute goal at Old Trafford was initially ruled out for offside by referee Michael Oliver.
However, a VAR review using semi-automated offside technology showed that Haaland was three centimetres onside when Josko Gvardiol delivered the cross, leading to the decision being overturned.

The video officials then checked whether Fernandez had touched the ball, which would have created a new offside phase against Haaland.
