ASUU-LASU declares indefinite strike over unmet 2025 agreement

Academic activities at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, face an imminent shutdown as the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-LASU) has declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action.

The industrial action, which takes effect today, Tuesday, 15th September 2026, was resolved during an emergency congress meeting held by the union.

According to the union’s leadership, the decision follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum served to the Lagos State Government to implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU Agreement.

In a joint statement issued at the end of the congress by the Coordinator of the ASUU-LASU Steering Committee, Dr. Oluwaseun Babalola, and the Secretary, Thanny Nooem, the union expressed deep dissatisfaction with how the state authorities are handling the welfare of its members.

The congress unanimously highlighted critical grievances, particularly focusing on poor staff salaries and unresolved retirement benefits for retired professors.

“The union has before now waited patiently and made several attempts to constructively engage the government in good faith,” the statement read. “However, the prolonged delay and lack of concrete action have left the union with no option but to resort to industrial action.”

ASUU-LASU insisted that the only “firm and unambiguous pathway” to bringing lecturers back to the classrooms is the full domestication and immediate implementation of the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement.

The union’s leadership vowed that the strike will remain absolute and indefinite until all disputed issues are completely addressed and the agreement is signed and implemented in full.

Neither the Lagos State Government nor the management of the university has issued an official reaction to the strike declaration as of the time of filing this report.
