Bolaji Akinola, a Special Adviser to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, has criticised singer Davido over his recent social media comments directed at the minister.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Akinola described the singer’s remarks as disrespectful and inappropriate, insisting that no amount of online criticism would prevent Governor Ademola Adeleke from facing defeat in the August 15, 2026, Osun State governorship election.
According to him, although every citizen is entitled to freedom of expression, public figures should exercise restraint and uphold cultural values, particularly respect for elders.
“Davido’s freedom of speech is not a licence for inherited arrogance,” Akinola said, adding that insulting a statesman “old enough to be his father” reflected poor character and lack of decorum.
“While every Nigerian has the right to political opinion and free expression, it is disgraceful that a public figure of Davido’s stature would resort to crude insults and juvenile theatrics against a statesman old enough to be his father,” he said.
“In Yoruba culture, respect for elders is not optional; it is a fundamental value. Well-brought-up Yoruba sons do not insult their elders on social media because of partisan excitement or family political interests.”
Akinola contrasted Oyetola’s record in public office with what he described as distractions from the Adeleke political camp, maintaining that the minister’s performance as former governor and current minister “speaks for itself.”

He said Oyetola had served Osun State and Nigeria with “dignity, restraint, competence and an unblemished record of public service.”
“Unlike those addicted to social media drama and attention-seeking outbursts, Gboyega Oyetola’s record of service, performance and integrity speaks loudly for him,” he added.
The aide further described “cheap insults” as “the last refuge of a panicked campaign,” claiming that residents of Osun State were more concerned about governance than “celebrity side-shows.”
He also accused the current administration in the state of poor governance, economic stagnation and administrative incompetence over the past three and a half years.
Akinola said the minister remained focused on his national assignment in the marine and blue economy sector and would leave political decisions to the electorate in Osun State.
