The Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) plans to launch a N500 million Education Relief Fund as an immediate intervention fund for distressed unity colleges and students in the country.
Speaking after his emergence as the new president-general of the association, Seyi Gambo, said that critical challenges affecting unity schools included 18.4 million out-of-school children nationally, 14.4 million substance abuse users among students aged 15 and above, as well as land encroachment affecting FGC Kano and FGC Kaduna.
Gambo, who said, graduating from a unity school was a privilege that came with lifelong responsibilities, added that the responsibilities extended to family, fellow alumni, the country, successor generations and the Creator.
He said the new administration, in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Education, would conduct a national infrastructure audit of unity schools, as well as a comprehensive facility review and develop an intervention roadmap.
The president-general added that the association planned to make a joint presentation to the National Assembly on national education policy, unity school security and funding. He stated that it would deliver Independent Power Projects (IPPs) to 17 schools and resettle displaced campuses within one year.
