Manage an itchy anus (pruritus ani) by maintaining scrupulous, gentle hygiene, keeping the area dry, and avoiding irritants. Clean gently with water or unscented wipes after bowel movements—never rub—and pat dry. Use OTC 1% hydrocortisone or zinc oxide creams, wear cotton underwear, avoid scented products, and avoid scratching.
You can wash with warm water only (avoid soaps) after bowel movements or use a bidet/shower. Make sure you pat dry, do not rub. Using a hairdryer on a cool setting can help. Wear loose-fitting, breathable cotton underwear.
Avoid irritants such as perfumed soaps, bubble baths, scented toilet paper, and tight clothing.
