Lying down after eating

Published by

I usually enjoying lying down after eating. I read somewhere that is is wrong. Kindly explain.

Chioma (by SMS)

The stomach is a muscular sac filled with highly corrosive hydrochloric acid. A muscular ring called the lower esophageal sphincter acts as a valve to keep this acid contained.

When a person is upright, gravity assists in keeping the heavy mixture of food and gastric juices at the bottom of the stomach.

Lying flat removes this gravitational advantage, allowing the acidic contents to press directly against the sphincter.

If the valve is overwhelmed by a full stomach, the acid escapes into the esophagus, causing the burning sensation known as heartburn and increasing the risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This is why it is wrong to completely lie down immediately after a meal.
