Gunmen kill police officer, Keke driver, one other in Onitsha

Gunmen numbering about six, on Sunday, shot and killed a police officer, a Keke operator and one passerby around Ukaegbu /Oraifite Street,Awada, near Onitsha in Idemili North LocaI Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident, which threw residents of the area into fear, was said to have happened at about 10:30 am, Tribune Online gathered

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the gunmen, who arrived the police check point around Ukaegbu/Oraifite Street in a white Sienna bus, took the policemen unaware as they aimed and killed their victims immediately on arrival while stray bullets hit and killed a tricycle rider and a young man who was reportedly going for a Sunday worship in a nearby church.

The incident, which forced many residents of the area to remain indoor despite their desire to attend other social events, our correspondent gathered was to instill fear among residents of Onitsha and its neighborhood as Emma Powerful, spokesman of IPOB has consistently appealed to residents of South-East Region to disregard any further threat by any group to obey the now weekly Monday sit-at-home as has become a tradition in the region.

However, soldiers and other security personnel have been drafted to the scene with barricades condoning off the entire route leading to the scene of the unfortunate incident.

Residents of the area and motorists were also finding it difficult to gain access to their houses as of the time of filing this report.

It could be noted that murdering of security have been on the increase in the South-East region of Nigeria in the last seven months and there seems no end in sight to the killings.

When contacted, the State Police Spokesman, DSP Ikenga Toochukwu, said he is yet to get details of the incident. He promised to update our correspondent later.
