Building collapse: Lagos govt confirms no deaths recorded, launches intensified probe

The Lagos State Government has announced that no deaths were recorded in the seven-storey building that collapsed in Banana Island, Ikoyi.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, disclosed that as of the time of the report, 25 people had been rescued from the site, with none trapped in the rubble.

Speaking on the ongoing search and rescue operation, Omotoso explained that the site has been divided into quadrants and that quadrants two and three have already been levelled to ground zero, with search operations completed.

He also stated that 16 people with moderate injuries were admitted at General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island and Police Hospital Falomo for treatment and care, while nine others with minor injuries were treated and discharged at the site by Lagos State Ambulance Services.

Omotoso further revealed that preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred during concrete casting, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed that all developments on Banana Island be placed on hold pending a comprehensive audit by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

Eyewitnesses, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, claimed that the building collapsed after a concrete mixer truck hit some load-bearing columns.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has been working to excavate the site, using architectural designs to assist in the search and rescue operation.

Omotoso assured the public that the Lagos State Government will continue to provide updates as investigations progress.
