Antibiotics and flu

Published by

Kindly help me confirm if I can take antibiotics for my flu which has been on for the past five days. Thanks.

No, antibiotics do not work for the flu because the flu is a viral infection, and antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria, not viruses. Taking antibiotics for the flu won’t help you get better and can lead to antibiotic resistance, making future bacterial infections harder to treat.

For the flu, antiviral medications (prescription only) or managing symptoms with rest and fluids are appropriate treatments, not antibiotics.
