Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, on Wednesday, laid the foundation for the construction of a multi-million-naira mega school in Marama town, Hawul Local Government Area of the state, and ordered the recruitment of additional teachers to address manpower gaps in the area.

The mega school, a two-storey structure with 36 classrooms, offices and other facilities, will be built at Marama Central Primary School, an old missionary school established in the 1930s and now in a dilapidated state.

During the visit, the governor also commissioned a shopping complex at the Pakilama/Marama Main Market, executed by the Hawul Local Government Council under its chairman, Hon. Hussaini Malgwi.

He further laid the foundation for the construction of a Higher Islamic College in Shani Local Government Area, which will have 48 classrooms and other facilities.

Speaking in Marama, Zulum said the projects were in fulfilment of his campaign promises to improve the education sector and ensure development across communities in the state.

“I am happy to lay the foundation for the mega school in Marama. In line with our campaign promises, this administration will transform the education sector. We will construct a befitting two-storey building with 36 classrooms and other facilities,” the governor said.

Zulum expressed concern over the shortage of teachers at Marama Central Primary School and the Junior Secondary School in the town, and directed that qualified teachers be recruited.

“Due to the shortage of teachers, we must recruit competent teachers who are indigenes of Marama to teach in this school,” he said. The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revamping the education sector through sustained investment in infrastructure, manpower development and skills acquisition.

He said the mega school, when completed, would include a computer section and laboratories equipped with modern facilities.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, said Marama Central Primary School, established by missionaries in the 1930s, had structures that were no longer suitable for learning and would be demolished to pave the way for the mega school project.

He commended the governor for his commitment to improving education across the 27 local government areas of the state.

The governor was received by prominent sons and daughters of Marama, including the Vice-Chancellor of Nile University, Abuja, Professor Dilli Dogo; a former commissioner and former chairman of Hawul Local Government Area, Hon. Inuwa Bwala; as well as traditional rulers, academics and religious leaders.
