Zamfara: One million soldiers can’t end killings without support —Defence Minister

The Minister of Defence, Brigadier-General Mansur Dan’Ali, has disclosed that  even with one million soldiers, killings in Zamfara State may not end without support from the communities.

The minister, who was in Gusau, on Saturday, said he was in the state on an assessment tour.

He maintained that communities  have to complement the efforts of government in fighting crimes in the state.

According him, “in fighting insurgency, communities have to support the efforts of security agencies. Let me tell you, even if we deploy one million soldiers to fight insurgents in the state, they may not end insurgency without the support of the communities.”

The minister, who visited the headquarters of Operation Sharandaji in Gusau, the state capital and was received by Brigadier-General Lynus Udeagbala, said military men were trained to protect lives and not to be killed.

The minister explained that the issue of security was  everybody’s business, adding that communities, being familiar with their terrain should support the military in fighting insurgent in the state.

He said he was from neibouring  countries of Niger, Chad and Cameroon to discuss with the authorities there on security matters.

The minister sympathised with families of slained soldiers as a result of insurgeny.
