THE Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, Lagos has emerged overall winner at the just-concluded Annual Students’ Vocational Skills Competition.
The competition was organised by the Department of Technology and Science Education, Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.
The students of the college exhibited two projects: a fan-controlled charcoal stove and a yam peeling machine. The fan-controlled stove won the star prize of N100,000, desktop computer and a printer.
The second position went to the Federal Science and Technical College, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, having exhibited a multipurpose oven for drying food items such as fish and meat.
The Federal Science and Technical College, Uromi, Edo State, clinched the 3rd position with its multi-distiller machine.
The two colleges that took the second and third places went home with a set of desktop computer and printer each and cash prizes of N75,000 and N50,000 respectively. This is even as other participating colleges from Dayi, Ohanso, Doma, Awka, Zuru and Shiroro were presented printers as consolation prizes.
Speaking at the ceremony for presentation of prizes, the Director of Technology and Science Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Joel Samuel Ojo, congratulated the winners and stressed that all participants have had opportunity of learning and further exposure.
He expressed optimism that with hard work, Vision 2020 is still achievable, noting that unlike in the past, students now have the opportunity of learning vocational skills as part of regular academic programmes.
