Winners emerge in Oyo TMC’s spelling bee

 

A student of government public school in Ibadan, Abdullah Ogunsina, has won the first prize in the spelling completion organised by The Muslim Congress (TMC), Oyo State chapter, on Sunday, September 2.

According to the state coordinator (Waali) of TMC, Alhaji Daud Oladosu, the competition is part of the organisation’s effort to partner with the state government in raising the standard of education in the state.

Out of the 28 senior secondary school students who registered for the competition through an online link hosted on TMC website, Abdullah, an SSS2 student of the Government College, Ibadan, came first.

Adegoke Fatiha, also an SSS2 student of As-Sabbaq (Pioneer) College, Ibadan, came second, while Abdul-Rasaq Dhul-Qarnain, SSS2 student of the Federal Government College, Ogbomosho, came third.

The presentation of prizes to the winners has been scheduled for Sunday, 7 October, at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, formerly Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, during the 2018 edition of the Annual Independence Lecture organised by Oyo State TMC.

Consolation prizes will also be presented to three other contestants who came fourth and fifth in the programme. They are Olajide Hannat Olabisi, Bello Muhammad and Adegoke Rodiyah.

The Chief Pronouncer and Chief Judge, Mr Kamoru Salaudeen, commended the contestants and rated the programme as being of international standard.

Salaudeen, who is the Education Officer of Oyo State TMC, advised implored schools and parents to always encourage the participation of students in programmes that are capable of improving their public speaking skills and language competence.

He disclosed that the winner of the state edition, Abdullah, would be sponsored by the TMC to represent Oyo State in the national edition which would be featuring spellers from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FTC), in Lagos later in the year.

Present at the programme were Mr Saheed Are of the Bursary Department, University of Ibadan, Mr Sulayman Adeyanju, the principal of As-Sabbaq College and Mr AbdLateef Gazaaliy, a communication and language expert, who served as a pronouncer on the programme
