A former senator, who represented Abia central senatorial district of Abia State and former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Nkechi Nwaogu, has said she wants to contest for the senate in the 2023 election, under the All Progressives Congress (APC), and among other things, champion youth empowerment and gender equality.
The senator made this known, on Thursday, during her declaration speech to run for senate titled ‘message of restoration’.
She stated that she decided to contest for the position after consulting with her God, and notifying her family, friends and well-wishers; and that having seen the people aspiring for the same position, across the party line, she is the best person for the job.
She added that a vote for her is “a vote for emancipation, liberation, restoration and resuscitation of Abia central from the shackles of misrepresentation and legislative redundancy.”
She said if elected, the youths of Abia Central will be adequately and sufficiently empowered and employed to face the realities on the ground.
“To the women; there is no nation without women. I am going back to the senate to champion a course for gender equality and to make sure that the gender equality bill that was rejected by the senate is revisited,” she said.
She added that, in the continuation of what she has been doing before, there are going to be massive empowerment and skills acquisition programmes for women in the senatorial district.
“To the men of Abia central, we are going to run a robust representation and organisation of regular town-hall meetings to know the various challenges our people are facing,” she said.
The senator noted that in the provision of basic infrastructure and social amenities, they are going to partner with relevant agencies like the Anambra river basin, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and other federal parastatals to offer democratic dividends to her people.
