The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has advised Nigerians not to allow challenges confronting the nation to slow down its wheel of progress in the collective dreams of a greater Nigeria.
Abiodun made this known on Friday in his address to mark the 61st National Day Celebration, held at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta, that the occasion of the country’s attaining nationhood was an opportunity for all to come around, reflect and find common ground to address them.
The governor said, “Nigeria might not have achieved all her aspirations, no Nation on earth is without its own peculiar challenges. We must appreciate that our dear country, Nigeria, like every other endeavour, is a work in progress.
“We also have to appreciate that in spite of our challenges, we have not remained the same since 1960. We are yet to become a global superpower but again we are not a basket case. For instance, from just one university at independence, Nigeria now has almost 200 universities.
“This is significant, not just because of the numbers but as an indication of the giant strides the Nation has made in education. And the abundance of Nigerian human capital – both at home and those making the country proud abroad – is a testimonial to our achievement in education and human capital development.
“This, however, is not to downplay the enormity of the challenges facing our nation. We must roll up our sleeves to work harder. Our dear Ogun State and the people are not immune to the negative impact of these national challenges, like every other federating unit. We also believe that our dear State and people deserve even more from the Nigerian nation.”
He also acknowledged the fact that Ogun, the Gateway state, had contributed immensely to the human capital development of the country at different times.
“With all the sacrifices made by the people of Ogun State towards National development, we are more than ever convinced that a united Nigeria is a better place for all of us than a balkanized nation. We have all the resources to overcome all the challenges threatening our national unity and progress,” he added.
