The Bauchi State government has reacted to complaints by COVID-19 patients who are in isolation at some of the designated centres in Bauchi State, that they are being underfed by those responsible for their feeding for fear of being infected with the virus.
In a press statement by the SA New Media to the State Governor, Lawal Muazu Bauchi the government stated that “The attention of Bauchi State Government has been drawn to delay in providing meals for coronavirus patients at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi. The government has since taken action and addressed the issue immediately.”
The government explained that “The issue of delay in providing meals for the patients was never deliberate and has been regretted. One of the patients confirmed that the issue has been addressed and they are being treated well at the hospital.
“Bauchi State Government vows to continue to consider constructive criticism in order to improve on the delivery of it’s services to the good people of the state especially at this critical period of coronavirus. Despite the increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state, the state government is working round the clock and assiduously to avert and tackle the further spread of the virus.”
In a tweet via his Twitter handle, one Buhari A. Tafida wrote: “My first day in ATBUTH #COVID-19 isolation centre, Bauchi, after been tested +ve to the virus, but it’s 7.45 pm now, yet no breakfast/dinner is served to us (patients). Should we be taking care of our meals?”
Relations of some of the patients who spoke to Tribune Online under the condition of anonymity decried the situation which clearly showed that the people are been stigmatised.
They lamented that rather than be shown care, love and encouragement, the patients are being neglected by not being supply regular meals while their relatives are not allowed to serve them food a development that is complicating their rate of recovery.
The relatives, therefore, called on the government to act quickly to save the situation before it degenerated to something else which may not be palatable to the state.
Meanwhile, the state government has responded to the situation by directing the people concerned with the feeding of the patients as a matter of urgency salvage the situation.
The government added that “The administration of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, Kauran Bauchi with our collective support, will continue to monitor not only patients of COVID-19 but patients of other ailments to ensure they are served with the desired treatment and attention.”
