We don’t value human lives, says Simi

As Nigerians continue to mourn the deaths of school pupils trapped in a school building that collapsed on Wednesday, Afro-soul singer, Simi, has weighed in on the matter, saying it was sad that Nigerians no longer value human lives.

With more than 10 pupils killed in the incident that left many parents in shock, Simi said such unfortunate incident could have been prevented if the government and those saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that things are done properly had done their job.

The Smile For Me singer, who got married to his long-time boyfriend, Adekunle Gold in a private wedding last year, maintained that she was saddened by lack of value that made people ignore or take for granted basic things that needed to be done to protect and preserve lives.

“This lack of value that makes us ignore or take for granted the basic things that need to be done to protect/preserve lives. Oh God it scares me. It scares me so much. And it’s our norm now. We don’t even know how to ask for better any more”.

Unhappy Simi bemoaned the government for failing to protect lives, added that in other climes, those who ought to check the building to make sure it was safe for people to live in would have been jailed or sued for all the money they ever had.

“Someplace else, people would go to jail and/or be sued for all d money they ever had. INCLUDING THE GOVERNMENT!! Because there should be offices that do these checks to make sure buildings are okay to live in or use for a school. Accountability is necessary for progress.”

She cautioned people to stop asking God to do for them what they ought to do themselves, adding that “We say let’s just pray.” But we have. And he keeps answering us by giving us common sense. It’s so sad. I can’t even begin to imagine how the people who have family/friends in the rubble feel.”
