As voters’ registration exercise commences nationwide on Friday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that the exercise will only take place at the headquarters of each of 744 local government council areas across the country with a five-man team of INEC officials handling the registration.
The commission’s administrative secretary for Lagos State, Dr Mudashiru Mustapha, made this known on Monday this during a stakeholders meeting between INEC, political parties, civil society organisations and the media.
According to the INEC chief, the purpose of the exercise is to update people on the exercise and highlight the critical issues relating to the registration exercise in order to sensitise and mobilise them towards the 2019 general election.
He said the first prong exercise would take a period of three months followed by another three months when the Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) would be processed before the commencement of another three months of voter’s registration.
He said that the registration exercise was meant mainly for those who had turned 18 years since the last exercise, as well as those who did not register before and those who wanted to transfer from other parts of the country and local government council areas.
Others, Mustapha said were those who lost their voter’s cards and those who never collected their PVCs from the past exercise, even as he disclosed that over one million PVCs were yet to be collected by voters in Lagos State alone.
He, therefore, called on the people of Lagos State to take the opportunity to register as the date for the 2019 general election draws near.
