VIDEO: Christmas Then and Now; what changed?

Published by

Have you ever heard adults compare their childhood Christmas to what Christmas feels like now in this era of adulting? Let me take you back to what Christmas was like just 10 years ago. 10 years a lot? Maybe not.

You would agree with me that December used to feel magical, a season filled with jingle bells, colourful decorations, and pure excitement.

But nothing compared to this Christmas Day itself. It was a banquet of meals shared with love, laughter, unity, and unforgettable memories.

Every child eagerly looked forward to that special day when Santa came bearing gifts. As typical Nigerian kids, we were sent to deliver food, drinks, and gift items to neighbours. In return, our little hands were often “squeezed” with N50 or N100 notes as a token of appreciation. And a N200 on a good day from that rich neighbour.

Not just that uncles, aunties, and family friends visited with gifts, and children couldn’t wait to show off their newly expanded wardrobes to friends and relatives. That was Christmas.

Fast forward to the present, and you may be wondering, what changed?

For many Nigerians, Christmas was once defined by abundance, excitement, and togetherness. Childhood memories of festive lights, long journeys home, and family gatherings remain vivid. Today, however, those memories contrast sharply with the realities of present-day celebrations.

And all these are what I discussed in the link below with my co-host; comparing Christmas 10 years ago to how different factors shape celebrations today.

Of course we didn’t leave out the  modern influence that has reshaped the season in the video.

The rise of “Detty December” , a month-long stretch of concerts, parties, and cultural events that has positioned Nigeria as a festive tourism destination.

Ever heard of IJGB(I just got back)? Nigerians in the diaspora who return  home alongside international visitors to celebrate the festive season .

Despite the changes, Christmas in Nigeria remains a celebration of faith, family, and community. Whether marked by abundance or survival, the true spirit of Christmas continues to live in the hearts of Nigerians.
