American rapper, William Leonard Robert, popularly known as Rick Ross was arrested by Miami Beach police early Thursday over domestic violence allegations, including a felony charge of battery by strangulation, according to Miami-Dade jail and court records.
Rick Ross was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at 6:10 a.m. Thursday.
The 50-year-old rapper is facing two charges in the case: one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery. Both charges are classified as involving domestic violence.
Rick Ross’ attorney, Bradley Horenstein, has denied the allegations against the rapper and called for the legal process to take its course before conclusions are drawn.
“All I can say is that the allegations are false. He’s innocent. Everything is going to come out,” Horenstein told CBS News Miami. “We just ask that you allow the process to play out before rushing to judgment, because the truth will come in.”
Court records show that Rick Ross’ bond was set at $5,000 for the battery by strangulation charge and $1,000 for the battery charge, bringing the total to $6,000.
His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 22.
Authorities had not immediately provided details about the alleged incident, including where and when it happened or Rick Ross’ relationship with the alleged victim. CBS News Miami has requested his arrest report from the Miami Beach Police Department and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.
His arrest came days after his former girlfriend, Jazzma Kendrick, publicly accused him of physical abuse.
According to People.com, Kendrick alleged on social media that Ross injured her lip during an incident she said occurred about a month earlier.
Rick Ross had not publicly responded to those allegations, and it was not immediately clear whether Kendrick’s claims were connected to the charges resulting in his arrest.
