The umbrella body for all sons and daughters of Ibadan in the United States of America, the Ibadan Descendants’ Union (IDU), will be holding its 12th biennial national convention on Friday, 20 September 2024, in Houston, Texas.
A statement by the National Public Relations Officer of IDU, USA, Mr Sola Bolomope, said the convention, slated to take place at Grace Events Centre, 15401, Bellaire Boulevard, Houston, is a three-day event that will be rounded off on Sunday, 22 September.
According to the statement, the theme of the convention, where the governor of Oyo State, Mr Seyi Makinde and the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakuleyin, will be the special guest of honour and the royal father of the day, respectively, is ‘Celebrating and Embracing Our Cultural Pride in the Diaspora’.
A highlight of this year’s convention, the statement said, is a fundraising ceremony for the construction of Ibadan House proposed to be sited in Houston, Texas.
“IDU, USA, founded in 2003, is a socio-cultural non-profit organisation established by sons and daughters of Ibadan living in the US with the mission to promote and support social, cultural, academic and economic growth and development of Ibadan and its people.
“This is the reason the organisation has, since inception, been giving back to Ibadan by way of interventions in health, education and social development on the one hand and promoting Ibadan’s cultural heritage through festivals, exhibitions, social events, among others, on the other hand,” the statement said.
Since its establishment, the organisation, currently headed by Chief Abiola Iyiola, who is the Ajia Olubadan of Ibadanland, has held several national conventions where developmental issues that concerned Ibadan were discussed.
