OFFICERS and Men of Anambra Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), over the weekend, embarked on awareness road walk in Anambra State as part of programmes to mark the Fifth United Nations Global Road Safety Week and West Africa Road Safety Organisation Week – WARSO Week.
Members of the Corps were accompanied in the walk by operatives of some sister Agencies including Nigeria Prisons, OCHA Brigade, Anambra Traffic Management Agency, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps and TRACAS among others.
The walk started from FRSC Headquarters Awka, through Amawbia Junction to Kwata Junction and ended at the Corps Headquarters, along Enugu- Onitsha expressway Awka.
Speaking after the exercise, the Sector Head of Operations of the Corps, Mr Anthony Okore said Safety Week was an opportunity to create awareness and remember those who died in road crashes.

Mr Okore explained that the Command has within the year intensified public awareness campaign across the State, sustained capacity building programmes for personnel, engaged in special patrols targeted at articulated vehicles and is organising zonal quiz for school children as part of initiatives to inculcate road safety principles in them, early in their lives.
He disclosed that the rate of road crashes has reduced within the first quarter of the year.
Also speaking the State Controller of Nigeria Prisons, Barrister Emma Nwakeze said road safety should be a collective responsibility of everybody, urging people to obey traffic rules and respect other road users.
In his part, the Managing Director of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra – OCHA Brigade, Mr Patrick Obiefuna urged the public to join the campaign towards reducing carnage on roads to reduce the burden on the society.
The State Commandant of Anambra Traffic Management Agency, Mr Chidi Umezinwa said the Agency is not relenting in enforcing the State Government ban on street trading across the State.
Mr Umezinwa noted that this will help to reduce road accidents and avoidable loss of lives.
