Acting Vice-chancellor, University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Adebola Ekanola, has inaugurated a University-wide task force for COVID-19 to ensure stricter adherence to the COVID-19 non-pharmacology protective measures at the University following a daily increase in COVID-19 infection and deaths in Nigeria.
Professor Ekanola, inaugurating the committee that cuts across both the teaching and non-teaching staffs of the University, said the teams and supervisors were to sensitise the university community on COVID-19 pandemic and protocol compliance as well as coordinate and supervise decontamination exercises.
Ekanola, who was represented by the University’s Dean of Student’s Affairs, Professor Adekeye Abiona declared that coronavirus has become a global issue hence the need to activate all safety measures.
According to him, “when we got to know that some people have been infected, and some students have been infected too. We decided that there should be a task force to do all the monitoring because it is not enough for us to just put a committee in place, especially with the delta coronavirus variants.
“We should have people that will help us to monitor. If you visit faculties, offices and so on, you will find that people are not complying with COVID-19 preventive measures.
“People don’t believe that COVID-19 is actually in existence and it beholds on us as the COVID-19 task force to make them realise the importance of keeping to the rules and regulations.”
Coordinator, University of Ibadan COVID-19 Emergency Response Committee, Professor Victoria Adetunji said the devastating effects of the pandemic on every facet of human life, including education, remains indelible.
She said that the University instituting COVID-19 Emergency Response Committee is part of the university’s efforts to respond adequately, effectively and efficiently to curbing the spread of the infection and thereby make the university community a safe place for teaching-learning and research activities.
According to her, “inaugurating COVID-19 taskforce is essential for the smooth and impactful operation of the committee.”
