Scores of soldiers and police operatives have been deployed to maintain law and order at the Ughelli Mainain Market – a hotbed of killings in recent times in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The deployment was on the request of the monarch of Ughelli kingdom, HRM Wilson Ojakovo Oharisi III JP during a meeting with authorities of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police as well as leaders of traders and their members at his palace on Friday.
The law enforcement agents were charged to mount checkpoints where necessary in the market area to avert a recurrence of recent killings, one of which claimed a youth during a ritual festival last week.
The monarch disclosed that the recent crisis that engulfed Otor – Iwhreko and Ekiugbo communities were not unconnected with the issues surrounding the market which led to wanton destruction.
He blamed the recent crisis on the non-implementation of the resolutions reached during the reconciliation meeting held in May 2021 between the two warring communities with the presence of security agencies, Ughelli North chairman, state government representatives and leaders of the market.
The monarch, who accused those who refused to implement the resolutions of failing the Ughelli kingdom, Ughelli North and the state, appealled to both warring communities to sheathe their swords.
He promised to, in collaboration with the local government, the market traders and the palace, fashion out the modalities on how to mobilise the security operatives to provide regular security.
The Oharisi III of Ughelli assured that hard times and severe punishment await those causing troubles and their sponsors in the kingdom.
