” It was around after 3 pm that we started hearing gunshots everywhere when the robbers arrived at the bank. They engaged the security men around the bank before gaining entrance into the bank with dynamite.

” The unfortunate side of the story is that two people; one police officer and another girl lost their lives. The robbers escaped with an undisclosed amount of money,” the source told TribuneOnline.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti state command, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu while confirming the incident said he could not ascertain the number of casualties as of press time.

The PPRO disclosed that he would issue an official statement on the robbery incident, adding that men of the command were already on the trail of the robbers.

Ikechukwu said, “I can confirm to you that there was a bank robbery. As I am talking to now, the operatives of SARS (the anti-robbery squad) with a combined team of 33 Police Mobile Force (PMF) are trailing the armed robbers. Information at our disposal is that they escaped through the bush path. We are trying to see how we can catch up with them. By God’s grace, we will. Preliminary investigation is ongoing as per the number of casualties.”

On whether a policeman was among the victims, he said “As I said, I will issue a statement on that much later. Anytime there is a deadly armed robbery attack like this, you cannot rule out that there might not be casualty except it takes the intervention of God. The robbers were able to gain entrance through the use of dynamites.”
