Trinity University holds fifth convocation

Published by

Trinity University, Yaba, Lagos, will on Friday, October 16, graduate a new set of 323 students across various disciplines, with 79 graduands (representing 24.46 per cent) achieving First Class honours.

Notably, two of the First Class graduates, Osayuware Toluwalase Osazuwa from the Department of International Relations and Osemen Joy Esezobor from the Department of Computer Science, attained a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Clement Kolawole, disclosed this on Monday during a pre-convocation press conference held on the university campus.

According to him, this year’s convocation, under the 2025/2026 academic session, is particularly significant as the university will also present its nursing science and medical laboratory science graduates for induction into the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, respectively. The nursing induction is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, while the medical laboratory science induction will hold the following day, each alongside other convocation activities.

Professor Kolawole, a specialist in Language Education, Reading and Curriculum Development, noted that the university was established in 2019 with just nine pioneering students and had been enjoying steady growth in student and faculty population, academic programmes, infrastructure, research and community service.

Giving a further breakdown of the graduation statistics, the Vice-Chancellor stated that 147 students attained Second Class Upper Division, 48 obtained Second Class Lower Division, and 10 graduated with Third Class degrees.

He explained that the university intentionally hosts two convocation ceremonies within a single academic session to prevent any vacuum for students between their final examinations and graduation.

“This arrangement is in the best interest of our students,” Kolawole said. “It enables them to proceed promptly for the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme and meet admission deadlines for foreign universities. It also ensures they are physically present to celebrate their graduation rather than returning long after they have been inducted into their professional bodies. This is why we are combining the two induction ceremonies with the convocation programme.”

Expressing delight at the institution’s progress, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted a major milestone: “The university has now produced its first homegrown professor. The Governing Council recently approved the promotion of one of our associate professors to the full professorial cadre—a clear testimony to our commitment to quality, staff development, and academic maturity. She is Mrs. Modupeade Adetunji, a Professor of Food Microbiology and Mycotoxicology.

“Further elevations are in progress and will be announced in due course.”

He added that the institution had deepened its commitment to entrepreneurship and employability by making skills acquisition mandatory for all students alongside their core academic programmes.

“We are already seeing results, with some of our students securing international remote jobs even before graduation through our digital literacy partnership,” he said.

Kolawole affirmed that the graduands had been well trained, adding: “We expect them to make a difference wherever they find themselves, equipped with the requisite skills, knowledge, good character, and the fear of God.”

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Pastor Samuel Olatunji, expressed gratitude to God for the university’s steady growth.

He commended the promoters, the management team and the entire university community for their dedication.

Olatunji stated that the university’s foundational vision remained clear: to produce globally competitive graduates and address societal challenges through cutting-edge research and community service. He assured stakeholders that the institution would remain steadfast in pursuing this mandate.
