Joy Udo, a teacher, has told a Jikwoyi Customary Court, Abuja, that she left her matrimonial home because her husband asked her to choose between the marriage and her job.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Joy, filed a petition seeking the dissolution of her marriage because her husband, Sammul Udo, asked her to resign from her job.
“The major disagreement we had before I left his house was that he asked me to quit my job because his mother never worked, so his wife must not work.
“I refused. I told him I won’t quit my job because if I do, I will suffer.
“He does not have enough money to cater for the family, I gave him the capital he started his business with,” she said.
Joy also told the court that her husband does not bear the entire responsibility of fending for the family, adding that he faked his identity to lure her to marry him.
“Before our marriage, my husband claimed to be a pastor, but after we got married, he stopped going to church and never wanted to pray with the family,” she said.
She alleged that her husband was promiscuous.
“I always see lots of love text messages on my husband’s phone. I once called one of his lovers who told me my husband never told her that he is married.
“When the lady told my husband that I called her, he made trouble with me and said that the marriage between us has ended,” she said.
Joy urged the court to dissolve the marriage and grant her custody of their children.
The respondent, Udo, a businessman, was not in court.
The judge, Everyman Eleanya, adjourned the case till May 27.
Giving reasons for his decision, Rasag said Shade was troublesome, fights everyone and embarrasses him.
“I got married to my wife a year ago and instead of experiencing a blissful union, what I daily face is pain and shame, Rasag told the court.
“My wife is not bothered that our union is not yet blessed with a child, all she derives pleasure in doing is fight.
“She has no shame; she has fought with all her neighbours in the place I rented for her.
“I receive calls from her landlord and co-tenants nearly every complaining of her misdeeds.
“On many occasions, I have had to pay medical bills of those she fought with and wounded.
“We have also made regular visits to the police station to write statements or get her bail.
“All these are gradually telling on my health.
“It ’s a big mistake ever getting married to such a shameless woman. All I pray for is divorce, the plaintiff concluded.
The defendant was absent in court despite being served a court notice.
The court president, Chief Ademola Odunade, having listened to the plaintiff observed that he was resolute on his request for divorce.
He thus ordered their marriage dissolved.
