Tobenna Anyaezu, a 2017 graduate from the University of Benin (UNIBEN), was named the Best Graduating Student from a class of over 50 students in the Department of Petroleum Engineering with an impressive cumulative grade point average of 4.692 on a scale of 5.0. Tobenna’s academic journey has been marked by excellence.
During his time at UNIBEN, he earned several prestigious scholarships, including the MTN Science and Technology Foundation Scholarship, Chevron Scholarship, and SEPLAT Foundation Scholarship and represented the department in numerous competitions. Known for his curiosity and dedication, Tobenna always sought out opportunities to learn more and share his knowledge with his peers.
Tobenna has also represented the University of Benin at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Africa Regional Paper Contest and the Petrobowl competition, which University of Benin emerged from the African Regional qualifiers to represent Africa on the global stage, further showcasing Tobenna’s talents on a larger stage. The University of Benin team went on to finish an impressive 2nd place in the world, beating schools from Europe, Asia and North America.
Outside the classroom, Tobenna enjoys reading, listening to music, and playing sports. He is also committed to giving back to his community, having served as a United Nations (UN) volunteer working on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year.
In January 2020, Tobenna will begin his fully funded master’s program in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Oklahoma, where he has been awarded a graduate teaching assistantship. He plans to focus his research on finding cleaner ways to produce energy for the future. Tobenna’s strong academic record, along with his drive for innovation and community service, positions him as a rising talent poised to make a lasting impact in the energy sector.
