A Thai woman has appeared before a court in Myanmar to face charges linked to the killing of an American diplomat, according to two attorneys familiar with the case.
The woman, whose identity has not been made public, attended a hearing on Thursday at Kamayut Township Court in Yangon.
She has been charged with murder and violating a provision of Myanmar’s immigration law that applies to foreign nationals accused of committing crimes in the country.
According to one of the attorneys, it remains unclear whether the suspect entered a plea or had legal representation during the court appearance. If convicted of murder, she could face a prison sentence of between 10 years and the death penalty under Myanmar law.
The lawyers, who provided details of the case, requested anonymity due to concerns about possible repercussions from Myanmar’s military-led government.
The case stems from the death of an American diplomat who was found dead on May 11 at Sakura Residence & Hotel in Yangon. The hotel is located about one mile from the U.S. Embassy and is frequently used by diplomats, business travellers and international visitors.
According to one of the attorneys, the diplomat suffered stab wounds to the head and neck.
The U.S. State Department confirmed the diplomat’s death but has not released further details, including the individual’s identity.
Authorities in Myanmar have provided little public information about the investigation. Police handling the case, officials at the detention facility where the suspect is believed to be held, and court representatives have all declined to comment.
Questions about whether U.S. officials observed the court proceedings were directed by the State Department’s Asia Pacific Media Hub to the U.S. Embassy in Myanmar. The embassy repeated the State Department’s earlier statement confirming the death and referred additional inquiries to local authorities.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said it is providing consular assistance to the woman in custody, the CBS reports.
However, it said it had no immediate information on whether legal support had been arranged for her court appearance. Further questions were referred to Thailand’s embassy in Myanmar, which did not comment.
The case is unfolding against the backdrop of ongoing instability in Myanmar following the military takeover in 2021 that removed the government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, the country has faced unrest and conflict, making access to official information more limited.
The American diplomat killing in Myanmar remains under investigation, with authorities yet to release additional details about the victim, the suspect, or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
