Terrorists profit from kidnapping school children — Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani, a former Senator from Kaduna Central, has described the kidnapping of school children by terrorists as a lucrative business in Northern Nigeria.

In a post on his social media handle, the former lawmaker stated that terrorists use this tactic to blackmail the federal government into making a substantial ransom payment on Friday, 8th March, 2023.

Sani expressed, “The kidnapping of school children by terrorists in Northern Nigeria is a lucrative business. They use it to blackmail the government for a huge payment of ransom. They know that it will evoke public sympathy for the pupils, and pressure will be mounted on the government to bow to their demands.”

He further emphasised that numerous parents have become apprehensive about allowing their children to attend school, posing a significant challenge to basic education in Northern Nigeria.

Sani stated, “Many parents in rural areas are now afraid of allowing their children to go to school. This is a serious problem for basic education in Northern Nigeria. Although this tragic incident happened, there is a significant drop in the occurrence of such attacks on schools compared to its frequency under the last administration.”

Recall that Tribune Online reported that bandits stormed LGEA Primary School, Kuriga (1), Chikun local government area of Kaduna state, and kidnapped more than 200 pupils and teachers on Thursday morning, 7th March 2023.
