The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) over the weekend granted access to Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL), operator of the Kainji Hydro Power Plant in Niger State, to commence the Kainji Switchyard Units 1G3 and 1G4 bays construction project at the Kainji Transmission Substation.
The physical handover of the 2x330kV bays construction site is intended to facilitate the start of construction activities, including civil, electrical, and mechanical works, as well as testing, commissioning, and other approved project tasks.
The 220MW-capacity bays, upon completion, will enable the evacuation of two additional turbines (1G3 and 1G4), each with a generation capacity of 110MW, totalling 220MW, to be installed at the Kainji power station.
During the signing and handover ceremony on behalf of TCN, the General Manager, Materials Control and Stores, and Chairman of the Project Technical Committee, Engineer Abdulkadir Gwaram Adamu, described the event as a critical milestone, noting that its execution will enable TCN to evacuate power generated by MESL’s new turbines into the national grid once completed.
He commended MESL’s management for its cooperation and commitment towards improving electricity supply in Nigeria, adding that the project will be fully executed by MESL at no cost to TCN and is scheduled for completion by December this year.
The Chief Technical Officer of MESL, Engineer Cleber Romao Grisi, expressed appreciation to TCN for granting site access and assured that the project would be completed within the agreed timeline.
