Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and former governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Tambuwal announced his decision in a statement on Thursday, saying he had formally communicated his resignation to his ward chairman in writing after “deep reflection and consultations”.
The former governor, who served two terms as governor of Sokoto State and previously as Speaker of the House of Representatives, said the PDP had played a significant role in his political journey.
He expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities it provided him to serve the country in various capacities.
“The PDP has been a significant part of my political journey, and I remain grateful for the opportunities it gave me to serve our nation, including as Speaker of the House of Representatives and as governor of Sokoto State during my second term in office,” he said.
Tambuwal, however, said the lingering internal crisis and leadership disagreements within the party made it difficult for him to continue as a member.
According to him, persistent divisions within the PDP have weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party.
“However, the persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the PDP have made it increasingly difficult to continue my membership of the party,” he said.
He added that the development had necessitated his decision to quit the party.
The former governor disclosed that he had officially joined the ADC alongside his associates and supporters.
Tambuwal said his decision was guided by the belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform founded on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to serving the country and promoting democratic ideals.
“I remain fully committed to the service of our country and to the ideals of democracy, justice, and national unity,” he said.
