The Sultan Foundation Sokoto for Peace and Development, in partnership with MAP International, has donated drugs worth over one billion US dollars to 72 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) in Kebbi State.
Speaking at the handover ceremony of the drugs to the State Ministry of Health, the Coordinator of the foundation and Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera, represented by Senior Councillor at the Emirate Council, Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan, stated that the aim of the free drug distribution to PHCs in the state was to reduce maternal mortality and combat other diseases.
He added that the drugs would greatly assist the people, particularly the less privileged, in accessing better healthcare. He also mentioned that the foundation plans to extend this initiative to other states, expressing hope that they will accept and fully utilize the support.
The State Commissioners for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed Birnin-Kebbi, and his counterpart at the Ministry of Physical and Urban Development, Alhaji Hayatu Bawa Jega, thanked the foundation for the generous gesture. They assured that the drugs would be delivered directly to the beneficiaries, who would use them effectively.
Both commissioners emphasised that the donation aligns with the state government’s healthcare policy, which focuses on improving the well-being of people at the grassroots level.
Alhaji Abdulrahaman Liman, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for the Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development, explained that a tracking mechanism has been developed to monitor the distribution of the drugs. This will ensure that the medications reach people at the grassroots level across all 72 PHCs in the state.
The drugs will be distributed based on identified needs at the PHCs and other health facilities, particularly those experiencing high rates of maternal morbidity, according to the data available.
