Administering CPR to infants can be a daunting task, but knowing the proper technique is crucial in emergencies. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can be a lifesaving intervention for infants experiencing cardiac arrest or respiratory distress. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to administer CPR to infants, along with essential tips for parents and caregivers.
Before starting CPR, assess the infant’s responsiveness. Gently tap or flick the infant’s foot and call out to check for any signs of movement or responsiveness.
If the infant is unresponsive and not breathing normally, immediately proceed with CPR.
If you’re alone, perform CPR for about two minutes before calling emergency services. If someone else is present, instruct them to call emergency services immediately while you begin CPR.
Place the infant on a firm, flat surface, such as the floor or a table. Ensure the area is clear of any obstructions. Keep the infant’s head and neck in a neutral position to maintain an open airway.
With the infant lying on their back, place two fingers (index and middle fingers) on the center of the infant’s chest, just below the nipple line.
Use gentle pressure to compress the chest about 1.5 inches deep at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
After 30 chest compressions, give two gentle rescue breaths. Seal your mouth over the infant’s nose and mouth and give a breath lasting about one second each, watching for the chest to rise with each breath.
Continue cycles of 30 chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths until emergency help arrives or the infant starts breathing normally.
Administering CPR to infants requires proper training and practice. Consider taking a certified CPR course designed specifically for infants to gain confidence and proficiency to administer CPR properly.
