Stampedes: ‘Why FG must create direct-to-citizen platform’

Published by

To avert a recurrence of recent incidents that led to the loss of lives in Oyo, Abuja, and Anambra during stampedes that occurred during free food distribution programs, the Federal Government has been advised to create a direct connection with Nigerian households for effective relief distribution.

The advice was given by an Ogun State-based political scientist and entrepreneur, Akande Olakunle Toheeb, who said such a platform would facilitate swift and effective relief distribution and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Akande, who stated this in a statement issued on Monday, noted that one of the factors affecting President Bola Tinubu’s administration is the lack of accountability in the distribution of government reliefs and palliatives in the country.

The Director of D2D Global Investment Limited also faulted the current palliative distribution system, which goes through state governors and grassroots politicians.

This, he said, often results in resources being diverted to political loyalists, leaving the intended beneficiaries empty-handed.

“The tragic incidents in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja during food-sharing exercises highlight the urgent need for an accountable platform that connects the Federal Government directly to households.

“By creating a direct-to-citizen platform, the government can demonstrate its commitment to transparency, accountability, and citizen welfare.

“This initiative has the potential to transform the way government services are delivered in Nigeria, promoting a more efficient and effective relief distribution system,” he said.

Akande expressed hope that Tinubu’s administration would remain a listening government, mindful of the sacrifices and expectations of the electorate.

“I laud the government’s efforts to position Nigeria on a global standard. Their seamless dedication to balancing the economy shows their intentional approach to rebuilding the nation,” he added.
