South East reps’ caucus backs calls for Nnamdi Kanu, others’ release

The South East caucus in the House of Representatives expressed strong support on Wednesday for the ongoing call to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

They appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider releasing Kanu and others in similar situations. The statement was signed by 43 lawmakers representing the five states of the South East geopolitical zone.

Key signatories included Hon. Benjamin Kalu (Deputy Speaker, Abia), Hon. George Ozodinobi (Deputy Minority Whip, Anambra), Hon. Enwo Igariwey (Leader, Ebonyi), Hon. Nnolim Nnaji (Deputy Leader, Enugu), and Hon. Miriam Onuoha (Secretary, Imo).

The caucus emphasized that an out-of-court settlement for Kanu’s case, supported by the federal high court, could swiftly resolve the issue and contribute to restoring peace in the South East region.

They highlighted the court’s positive disposition towards such a resolution, noting its importance in the context of civil and criminal jurisprudence.

In their collective appeal, they underscored the urgency and significance of achieving a responsible and prompt resolution to what they described as a longstanding legal impasse affecting the security landscape in the region.

They urged the President to consider this approach as a honorable and effective means to bring closure to this challenging chapter in Nigeria’s history.
