The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr Akutah Pius Ukeyima, on Friday reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to ensuring cargo safety and protecting the rights of the public within Nigeria’s maritime and transport sector.

Dr Ukeyima made the statement in Lagos during a stakeholders’ meeting on issues relating to cargo clearance at the seaport.

He emphasised that the Shippers’ Council works closely with security agencies, particularly the police, to promote public safety without placing additional burdens on businesses.

According to him, collaboration remains key to resolving challenges in the sector, stressing that the Council does not operate in isolation but partners with relevant authorities to guarantee cargo safety and smooth operations.

“We can only work together with the police to advance the security of the public. In that work environment, we must ensure that the safety of cargo is guaranteed without further complicating issues or imposing additional costs on businesses,” he said.

He disclosed that the Council has made progress in addressing industry concerns and assured stakeholders that its complaints unit remains open and responsive.

He explained that complaints received are promptly forwarded to the relevant authorities and acted upon without delay.

Dr Ukeyima also highlighted the presence of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at the meeting, describing it as evidence of a collective effort to address issues affecting the entire value chain.

He noted that the Council deals daily with sector-wide challenges and continues to promote mutual understanding among stakeholders.

He called on industry players to always report any challenges encountered, assuring them of the Council’s continued engagement with security agencies to resolve such issues and prevent disruptions to legitimate business activities.

Dr Ukeyima thanked participants for their understanding and engagement, reiterating that sustained dialogue and cooperation remain essential to safeguarding gains in the sector and ensuring efficient service delivery.
