A woman, Mrs Comfort Omowumi Dudu, has pleaded with the Oja’ba/Mapo Grade ‘C’ Customary Court, sitting at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, Oyo State, not to dissolve her 39-year-old marriage because no other man will marry her again if she separates from her husband and moreover, she has no place to go.
According to her, the plaintiff, Alfred, does not allow her to work.
She said: “My husband is a ritualist. All the children are in my custody but I do not admit my husband’s claim because he does not give me opportunity to work.
“We jointly built the house we are living in. There is no place I will go and nobody can marry me again. The children do not call him by his name and they are not using our house for prostitution as he has alleged. This is all I can say,” Comfort said.
Against the defendant’s plea, the plaintiff, Alfred, said that he seduced Comfort from another man in 1977 and he claimed that they have eight children produced by the marriage. The eldest of the children is 37 years old, while the youngest is 26 years. All these children, Alfred said, are on their own being grown ups.
“I wish for the dissolution of our marriage because my wife is stubborn and troublesome. She is a habitual fighter. She does not take care of the children; she has no time for them. She gave one of them out in marriage without my consent. She’s been doing things on her own for the past ten years and also uses my children against me.
“All her female children harbour boys in the house with her knowledge. She blackmailed me that I have a gun and also reported me to the Police.
“I want this court to separate us in order to save my life. There is no more love between us. In addition to this, I want the court to order the married children to go to their husbands’ houses. I’m fed up with her,” Alfred pleaded.
The court asked whether Alfred was informed about the wedding of the child who was given out in marriage without his consent, he said: “Yes, on the Thursday proceeding the wedding day.”
The wife also asked her husband about his allegation that she is troublesome and the man replied ‘yes.’
Comfort asked again “Why did I report you at the Police Station?” The husband answered, “You said I wanted to kill you.”
In other to give room for a possible settlement, the presiding judge, Chief Ademola Odunade adjourned the till December 20 for further hearing.
