Sheikh Gumi
Prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, on Tuesday backed the controversial tax reform bills despite opposition from Northern elites and Islamic clerics.
Speaking in an interview, Gumi, after weighing in on President Tinubu’s tax reform bills, said the tax bills are beneficial for Nigerians.
Gumi’s support came at a time when some Northern Governors, traditional rulers, as well as prominent Islamic clerics like Sheikh Adam Dokoro, Sheikh Bello Yabo, Sheikh Mansur Sokoto, Sheikh Sambo Rigachiku, Sheikh Salisu Zaria, and Sheikh Isa Pantami, among others, were expressing opposition to the bills currently before the National Assembly.
Gumi’s support for the bills came after he had carefully studied the draft documents, contrary to the position of most critics, who argued that it was against Northern interests.
The Islamic cleric commended the bills’ overall potential for reforms but suggested that the Value Added Tax (VAT) component requires adjustment to address concerns that have been expressed across the country.
“I believe the contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all.”
Recall that President Tinubu argued that the four tax reform bills would simplify and streamline tax administration, reduce the burden on low-income earners, and eliminate double taxation and the multiplicity of taxes.
The President also stated that the reforms will foster a fairer and more inclusive tax system, reduce Nigeria’s reliance on oil revenue, and support local economic activities.
