Daughter of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Shalewa Kuti, popularly known as DJ Shaarks, has again proved her worth in upholding the legacy of her father as she has continued to real out more Afrobeat music works.
DJ Shaarks held a private listening party recently to introduce her upcoming project entitled, #burnsofine #Washa to her fans and the media. The event, which coincided with her birthday was covered by the largest entertainment media outfit in Nigeria, (HipTV).
The energetic DJ, producer, and UK graduate of Music Industry Management, is working hard to reinvent Afrobeats in Africa.
On October 15, she dropped a single she made with Busiswa, an A-list South African artiste. The song is the first from her upcoming project #burnsofine #Washa, a development which has made her gain more accolades from her fans who fondly describe her as Afrobeats Princess, and rightly so, as her father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti created the Afrobeats genre.
The versatile artiste-cum-DJ took to the stage at this year’s Felabration held on October 11 to 17, at Afrika Shrine, organised yearly to celebrate Fela’s life, where she thrilled dignitaries and music lovers with her works. Shalewa Kuti is not a stranger to stage. Her father, Fela, is one of Africa’s greatest musicians.
However, this is not her first Felabration event. She organised the 2018 Felabration, which took place in the UK, where she left a great impression on fans’ minds, especially with her superb organisational skills.
DJ Shaarks, who is also a lawyer, transitioned into a Disk Jockey as contribution to Fela’s legacy by being a world-renowned DJ, as well as her passion for music.
According to DJ Shaarks “music liberates the soul. It makes me happy. That is why I love what I do. October has been a busy month for me. I released my EP, and even get busier with bookings. #Burnsofine #Washa is soul-liberating sounds from the Afrobeat Princess.’’
