Members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly have been urged to set aside party differences, come together and face their legislative duties with patriotic zeal so as to fast track development of the State.
The urge to cooperate was given by the Speaker of the Assembly, Abubakar Y. Suleiman who charged his colleagues on the need to live up to the responsibilities of their election by the electorate from the various constituencies of the state.
According to a press release issued by the Spokesperson for the Speaker, Comrade Abdul Burra copies of which was made available to newsmen, the Speaker gave the charge during the opening ceremony of a two-day Workshop on legislative duties organized for members of the State Assembly by the Bauchi State Government in collaboration with National Institute for Legislative and Democracy Studies (NILDS) in Kano.
The Speaker while declaring the workshop opened, stated that the workshop was aimed at preparing the lawmakers for the very important task of lawmaking in the State.
“it is worthy to note that our constituents have given us the mandate to represent them in the honourable house so that their yearnings and aspirations will be taken care of by the Government. This is a rare privilege to all of us. Thus, we should put the interests of our constituents above any other thing.” The statement quoted the Speaker stating.
Abubakar Sulaiman who tasked members to discharge their legislative duties with all sense of responsibility and patriotism added that the state requires innovative legislative interventions to fast track development in all ramifications.
The Speaker then congratulated the members for witnessing the end of the misunderstanding that almost set them against each other and assured them that he will run a transparent, all inclusive and open door administration and he will be just to each member.
The Workshop with the theme: ‘Good Governance Through Effective Legislative Engagement’ will be concluded on Thursday 29th August with the first batch of 17 members of the State Assembly participating.
According to the statement, the workshop “is coming ahead of the resumption of the lawmakers from recess which is rescheduled to hold next week.”
Comrade Abdul Burra noted that upon resumption, the lawmakers are expected to begin the screening of the Commissioner-nominees submitted to the House by the State Governor, Sen Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir before it went on Hajj and Sallah recess last month.
It will be recalled that the Bauchi State House of Assembly has been engulfed in a leadership crisis since its inauguration in June, before the warring parties sheathed their swords three weeks back and were consequently swore in even though the former Speaker, Kawuwa Shehu Damina and few others later reneged after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari .
