THE Senate, on Tuesday, directed Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to the remove all the speed bumps indiscriminately constructed off federal highways across the country.
It also called on the ministry to cause owners of petrol filling stations to build a service lane of not less than 50 metres on both sides of the stations, to avoid customers turning directly to and from the highways.
The upper legislative chamber equally urged the ministry to enforce setback regulations for fixed structures along highways and ensure planning authority regulations for motor parks, markets and places of worship.
These followed a motion sponsored by Senator Barnabas Gemade and Senator Stella Oduah.
They noted in the motion with dismay the thousands of speed bumps recently constructed on almost all federal highways nationwide, ostensibly to control the speed of motor vehicles plying the roads, but observed that they were indiscriminately constructed.
The Senate, also on Tuesday, tasked the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to construct over 4,000 small captive dams across all communities in Nigeria every year.
It also directed the committee on water resources to carry out investigations of groundwater in all river basins and monitor the deployment.
These followed a motion sponsored by Senator Gemade and Senator Oduah, as both submitted that the development would address the adverse effect of increased borehole drillings in Nigeria.
