MINISTER of Police Affairs, Alhaji Maigari Tambuwal, has described security of the nation as the full and exclusive responsibility of the Federal Government.
He disclosed this while commenting on the new security outfit organised by governors of the South-West states, code-named Operation Amotekun, saying “security is an exclusive preserve of the Federal Government, though voluntary contribution from any quarter, especially the state governments, can be welcomed.”
The minister, who was speaking with journalists in Sokoto on Saturday, however acknowledged “the invaluable assistance of the state governments and other key stakeholders.”
But he also said firmly that “there should be no illegality,” adding that “the constitution of the country is clear about this and any infraction would not be condoned.”
He, however, did not explain what he meant by “illegality.”
Also speaking on the plan by the Federal Government to replace soldiers with men of the Nigeria Police in the North-East, he said, “the officers and men of the Nigeria Police are ready to take over areas hitherto ravaged by Boko Haram insurgents, but where peace has been fully restored.
“Arrangements in this direction are ongoing with the military, other security agencies and the key stakeholders. As soon as these discussions are concluded, the police will swing into action.”
