…says UK visit strategic, not symbolic
Renowned author and security expert, Ambassador Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as a strategic move capable of boosting economic growth and strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.
Mumuni, in a statement issued on Saturday by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, dismissed criticisms from opposition parties that portrayed the trip as a mere diplomatic excursion at a time of heightened insecurity.
He insisted that international engagement remains essential to national development.
Mumuni, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said global partnerships play a crucial role in addressing insecurity by supporting economic expansion and strengthening institutional capacity.
He noted that diplomatic relations create opportunities for investment, job creation and access to critical resources that can improve infrastructure and social services across the country.
The security expert explained that the President’s engagements in the United Kingdom are expected to open doors to business partnerships and attract investors.
He added that a stronger economy would provide the resources needed to fund security operations and development initiatives, particularly in vulnerable regions.
According to him, international cooperation also provides access to modern security technologies, advanced training methods and intelligence-sharing systems that enhance the effectiveness of Nigeria’s armed forces and security agencies.
He added that stronger diplomatic ties position the country to build alliances, address regional threats, and secure support for peacekeeping efforts.
Responding to concerns about the President’s absence amid ongoing security challenges, Mumuni said governance involves clearly defined roles across institutions.
He explained that while the military and law enforcement agencies handle operations on the ground, the President provides direction through policy, funding and strategic engagement.
“The President does not personally fight battles or investigate crimes. His responsibility is to create the enabling environment for institutions to perform effectively. Engagements such as state visits are part of that responsibility,” he said.
He assured Nigerians that security operations continue without disruption, noting that the National Security Adviser, military leadership and other agencies remain fully active, with intelligence gathering and command structures functioning as required.
While acknowledging public concern over insecurity, Mumuni urged citizens to adopt a broader understanding of governance, emphasizing that national progress depends on the integration of economic policy, diplomacy, and security planning.
He likened the situation to a household where responsibilities must be balanced, noting that efforts to improve economic stability and strengthen international relations ultimately support the fight against insecurity.
The APC chieftain also called for greater accountability, urging Nigerians to demand clear updates on security progress and ensure that the outcomes of international engagements translate into tangible improvements in safety and development.
He stated that lasting solutions to insecurity require a comprehensive approach that combines strong institutions, economic development, and effective diplomacy.
“President Tinubu’s visit should be seen as part of a wider strategy to strengthen the nation. The real issue is ensuring that the gains from such engagements are translated into concrete benefits for the security and prosperity of Nigerians,” he said.
