Sanwo-Olu swears in newly elected 57 council chairmen

Published by

Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday, swore in the newly elected 57 Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) chairmen and their vice-chairmen respectively, charging them to put the residents first in all that they do by serving the people, even as he posited that they owed it a duty to ensure that they do not let them down in any way or form.

The governor gave this charge while speaking during the Swearing-In Ceremony, which took place at Lagos House, Ikeja, attended by government officials, party leaders, traditional rulers, led by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, among others.

Sanwo-Olu said the only way they could reciprocate the trust reposed in them by the people who voted for them was to give their best and ensure that the welfare and wellbeing of the residents take precedence in all their decisions.

This was just as the governor urged the newly-swore- in council bosses to start thinking from their first day in office, about the kind of legacy they would like to leave behind when their tenure came to an end as it would surely do one day.

He further urged them all to ensure that they build on the good legacies laid by their predecessors while emphasizing the need for continuity and progress in governance as well as the need to ensure they surpassed the legacies and the expectations of the people who had very enthusiastically elected them into office.

”Right from your first day in office, I implore you to start thinking about the kind of legacy you would like to leave behind when your tenure comes to an end because it will surely come to an end one day.

”As we all know, public office is a position of trust that no one holds forever – we hold it for a time and then we pass on the baton to others.

”Let me use this opportunity to emphasise the need for continuity and progress in governance. I urge you all to ensure that you build on the good legacies laid by your predecessors.

”Also, ensure that you surpass the legacies and the expectations of the people who have very enthusiastically elected you,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said.

According to him, this was not the time for them to alienate some people because of political differences, but time to give and make all citizens feel good governance.

Speaking further, Sanwo-Olu said the council chairmen were assuming their roles at a very challenging time in national life, due to the disruptive COVID- 19 pandemic, which he said had disastrous consequences for jobs, livelihoods and economies.

The governor said it was against this backdrop that residents had continued to clamour for and expect good governance; policy-making and implementation that would enable them to navigate these difficult times and emerge from it all on a solid socio-economic footing, declaring that the responsibility and burden as the leaders they had elected to live up to their expectations.

”It is our responsibility and our burden as the leaders they have elected, to live up to their expectations. I, therefore, say to you that they are expecting much from you.

”More than ever before, achieving this requires cooperation among all levels and arms of government.

”It is expected that you will work in unity with other tiers of government to bring to bear the dividends of democracy on the lives of people, in all the relevant areas.

”These are in areas of construction and maintenance of inner roads, waste management, primary education, healthcare, security, welfare programmes that touch the lives of people, among others,” the governor said.

”Let me assure you of our commitment at the state government level. We will continue to provide you with the much-needed support to discharge your responsibilities,” he assured.

Speaking earlier in his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Dr. Wale Ahmed, said the chairmen’s victory at the polls was a testimony to the solidity, strength, internal democracy and unity of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The commissioner said re-election/election was another call to a season of service, dedication and selflessness to the people, declaring that the work had begun in earnest.

”Your re-election/election is another call to a season of service, dedication and selflessness to our people.

”Therefore, the task ahead of you is to sustain or even surpass the tempo of performance of previous administrations in your respective council areas,” he said.

Moving a vote of assurance on behalf of the newly sworn-in 114 chairmen and vice-chairmen, the Chairman, Igbogbo-Bayeiku LCDA, Hon Sesan Daini, expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu and his administration for the support to the council administration, pledging that all the new chairmen would key into the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda of the state government.

”On behalf of the whole newly sworn-in chairmen, we will not disappoint you and I promise again that we will key into the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda of Mr Governor.

”I want to assure the governor that we are going to give you total support and cooperation. We will give guidance to our councillors that are going to work with us.

”We are going to be a team that you will never regret supporting. I promise total support and loyalty,” Daini said.
