He commended the department for the presentation of the three-book published in honour of the retired professors in the department.
Professor Aderinoye gave the valedictory lecture to mark the event on behalf of other retired professors in the department.
In his lecture entitled Adult Education Practice in Nigeria: Between Pedagogy and Andragogy, Professor Aderinoye noted that in education practice there were many teaching and learning models, or theories, pedagogy and andragogy were just two of many other teaching instruction concepts in the education knowledge delivery process.
According to him, pedagogy literally means the art and science of teaching children, describing it as the rules and principles that guide effective and efficient activities which lead to learning. Corroborating with a scholar, Marshake a, he said pedagogy is a teacher-centred model of teaching, while Andragogy is a theory of adult learning that set out the fundamental and scientific mutual planning of learning activities between the learners and the facilitators in a participatory process, while pedagogy is solely associated with children, as it can also be associated with adult learning.
He said”It is being advocated that teaching and learning processes in any form of learning must be based on andragogical model. In practice, andragogy goes beyond teaching, it is also applied to research. Many variants of andragogical model such as case studies , diaries, action and participatory research have been found to be much more productive than qualitative methods in the conduct of empirical research in adult learning and education.
“As adult educators we must prove to the world that andragogy caters for the interests of adult by making facilitation process in adult and non- formal education programmes meaningful. Also, we must be involved in action, participatory dairies and case study research since the application of findings from such research are made easier.
“However, studies have not been sufficiently done in the area of andrgogy which is responsible for the paucity of andragogical issues in the journal around the African continent. it is my conviction that at present no theory of adult learning is more relevant to adult education practice than the andragogical model despite the criticisms the model has been subjected to.
“While pedagogy is solely associated with children, it can also be associated with adult learning, invariably, while andrgogy is solely associated with adult learning it can also be associated with children learning.”
While professor Aderinoye, in his paper called for a review of our teaching and learning process and consider andrgogy and pedagogy worthy of adoption in our educational system, he also appealed to the FederalGovernments to allow the National Mass Education Commission, as well as other agencies at state and local government levels saddled with the responsibility to cater basic education, adult and non-formal education in the country to have direct access to the 2 per cent of the Consolidated Revenue Fund for their efficiency.
