Police recover 67 stolen cows in Kano

Operatives of the Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with the Military Joint Task Force, have recovered 67 cows and other livestock allegedly stolen by cattle rustlers in Gwarzo following a gun duel with the suspects.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the operation was carried out on May 6 after the command received credible intelligence that suspected rustlers had attacked villages around Gwarzo and neighbouring communities.

The statement said a combined team of police operatives from the Gwarzo Police Division and Military JTF personnel stationed along the Kano-Katsina border was immediately mobilised to the affected areas.

Police said the suspects opened fire on the security team upon sighting them, leading to a gun battle. However, the operatives reportedly overpowered the rustlers, forcing them to abandon the stolen animals and flee out of the state.

Items recovered during the operation included 67 cows, one donkey, and one sheep.

The livestock were subsequently taken into custody at the Gwarzo Police Division before being released to their rightful owners on May 7 after identification and verification conducted through district heads under the supervision of the local government chairman.

The Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the operatives and the Military JTF for what he described as gallantry and professionalism during the operation.

Bakori reiterated the command’s commitment to combating criminal activities threatening rural communities and the agricultural economy of the state.

He also urged residents, particularly those in rural areas, to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to support crime prevention efforts.

The police said intensified efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and prevent further incidents in the affected communities.
