Police launch manhunt over killing of three youths in Delta

Delta State Police Command has launched a full-scale manhunt for Chief Jerry Nkeeshe, the Owelle of Onicha-Olona, and members of an armed group accused of killing three youths during a violent clash in Asaba.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the incident occurred on Monday, 24th November, near ‘B’ Division, Asaba, when a group allegedly led by the chief stormed a parcel of land at Okwe community along the Asaba–Onitsha Road.

Preliminary findings show that the group, which reportedly included vigilantes and suspected cult member, some dressed in Army camouflage, attempted to enforce an unauthorised quit notice on the property. The statement noted that the operation was carried out “without any court order”.

Resistance from youths in the community led to a confrontation. The armed men allegedly opened fire indiscriminately, leaving three young men with severe gunshot injuries. “They were confirmed dead while receiving treatment at the hospital,” the police said.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, immediately ordered the deployment of tactical teams, intelligence operatives, and specialised investigators to locate and arrest all individuals connected to the attack.

Describing the killings as “an unprovoked, reckless, and brazen display of lawlessness”, CP Abaniwonda vowed that the Command would not bow to intimidation or influence.

“We will not relent until every perpetrator of this violence, irrespective of title or backing, is apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law,” he said.

He urged residents of Onicha-Olona, Asaba, and surrounding communities to support the ongoing operations.

“We call on members of the public to provide credible information. This Command will not tolerate any act capable of threatening the peace and safety of our communities,” he added.

The police assured the public that normalcy has been restored in the affected area, with intensified surveillance, intelligence-led patrols, and coordinated search operations underway to prevent further disturbances.

Citizens with information on the suspects’ whereabouts are urged to contact the Command via its dedicated emergency line: 08036684974.

The statement reaffirmed the Delta State Police Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
