As residents of Sokoto grapple with a worsening water crisis, a notable act of philanthropy has provided temporary relief to several communities within the state capital. Hon. Shamsudeen Hannafi Kofar Kade, a respected community leader and humanitarian, has launched an emergency water supply initiative to alleviate the suffering of residents affected by the ongoing scarcity.
On Monday, Hon. Shamsudeen personally supervised the delivery of nearly ten water tanks to critical areas experiencing acute shortages. His target is to reach at least twenty tanks before the end of the day, a move widely applauded by community members and local stakeholders.
The water distribution covers several severely affected areas, including Kofar Kade, Salihu Anka Primary School, Sagin Lemo, Garkar Bala Gari Mai Fata, and parts of the Gandu area in the Sokoto metropolis.
These communities have endured days—some even weeks—without running water due to the failing municipal supply system.
“This is not the first time Hon. Shamsudeen has stepped in during a crisis,” said Malam Ibrahim, a resident of Garkar Bala.
“His efforts are a lifeline, especially for families with children and the elderly, who cannot go long without clean water.”
The current water crisis in Sokoto has been attributed to a combination of ageing infrastructure, inconsistent electricity supply to power water plants, and increasing population pressure. While government interventions are still awaited, individuals like Hon. Shamsudeen are bridging the gap through swift community-level action.
Speaking to reporters, Hon. Shamsudeen stated, “Water is a basic necessity. I couldn’t sit back and watch our people suffer in silence. Until sustainable solutions are implemented, I will continue to support our communities however I can.”
Local authorities have acknowledged his contribution and urged more well-meaning individuals and organisations to emulate the gesture.
As temperatures rise and demand for water increases, community-based interventions like these are proving to be both timely and impactful.
